About Abingdon Foodbank
Abingdon Foodbank serves the local community of Abingdon and the surrounding villages by offering food support to people who are struggling to feed themselves and their families.
We work closely with the local council, health services, schools, churches, Citizens Advice and other charities, who all refer people to us for help.
If you come to us, the first thing we offer is a warm welcome and a cuppa. Then we provide a parcel of food, to keep you going for the next few days. This includes not just tinned food, but fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, butter, cheese and eggs. We also provide toiletries, cleaning products and pet food.
We will listen to you and try to point you to other agencies who may be able to help – with benefits, debt, housing, mental health support and more. And we are part of a network of charities trying to combat food waste, so there is always a ‘help yourself’ table laden with surplus food from supermarkets and with tasty surprises. On Fridays we work with the Christ Church clothes bank, which has a range of clothing for adults.
Abingdon Foodbank was founded by Christ Church in 2009, as part of the church’s Christian outreach in the community, and the years of austerity that followed saw demand for our service rise rapidly. We now answer over 200 requests for help each month. We are based at Christ Church and the church has provided us with our warehouse building. We are supported by churches, supermarkets, companies and individuals in the local community and staffed by an enthusiastic group of volunteers.
In 2020 we joined the Trussell Trust and its nationwide network of food banks. Trussell provide expertise, support and guidance from their wide experience of food banks and are active in campaigning for an end to poverty and food insecurity.
In 2018 we opened a second centre at Preston Road Community Centre to serve people in South Abingdon. The partnership that ran that centre came to an end in 2026 but we continue to serve the whole town and surrounding area.
This year we have secured funding to refurbish our building so that we can welcome people into it, offering reception, waiting and food storage under one roof and thus making visiting the food bank easier for everyone.
We are funded entirely by voluntary donations of food and money and we are grateful to everyone who supports us.
