Give Help
Volunteer
Volunteers are the life blood of foodbanks and your skills could be just what we need.
In normal times
Volunteers are the driving force behind foodbanks. There are thousands of volunteers across the UK, helping The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network get emergency food to people in crisis. At Abingdon Foodbank we have around 60 volunteers helping in a variety of different ways.
Helping at a foodbank centre
Volunteers help to weigh, sort and store donated food before it’s made into parcels for clients to collect. They also meet clients, have an informal chat with clients over a cup of tea to discuss their situation and signpost to further support, and give out food parcels.
Collecting donations
We have a small team of volunteers who coordinate collecting food donations from our collection points in their spare time. This can work well for people who are keen to volunteer but are unable to attend our daytime sessions. Please be aware that volunteers do need to use their own vehicles and fuel.
Listening and signposting services
If you have experience, knowledge and expertise that you think could be beneficial to our clients and would like to become a listener or signposting volunteer, please do get in touch. We welcome volunteers with experience in housing, benefits and social care, or can provide support with life skills in areas of budgeting and money management. You will be friendly and approachable, talking with clients in a confidential and non-judgemental manner during their administration process.
If you are interested in volunteering please email [email protected]
Age restrictions
Please note: Unfortunately, due to health and safety and safeguarding precautions, we are unable to offer work experience, Duke of Edinburgh or volunteering placements under the age of 18. We encourage anyone under the age of 18 to support their local foodbank via fundraising and food collection initiatives.
